Sign of the Times: A punchy Prince film shot in Rotterdam and Minnesota, characteristics thirteen numbers, some overhead photography and lots of bump and grind from both genders. Far and Away: A scrappy Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the comparably feisty daughter of a prosperous landowner, and together they travel to America to seek their final fate in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Superlative platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both attractive and involving; the problem is a drastic absence of good dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)
Basic Instinct: Detective Nick Curren is investigating a murder. Sexy and famous author Catherine Tramell is becoming a prime suspect. She lures him into a torrid love affair. Now he struggles to resolve her guilt or innocence in the case.
Stallion Road: Devoted veterinarian Reagan and novelist buddy Scott vie for the benevolence of horse rancher Smith; low-key drama written by Stephen Longstreet. Cast includes Ronald Reagan, Alexis Smith, Zachary Scott, Peggy Knudsen, Patti Brady, and Harry Davenport. (91 minutes,’47)
No Minor Vices: Arrogant comedy in which stereotypically off beat performer Jordan tries to come between pediatrician Andrews and spouse Palmer. Starts off well however slows down. Cast includes Lewis Milestone, Dana Andrews, Lilly Palmer, Louis Jordan, Jane Wyatt, Bernard Gorcey, and Man Bridges. (96 minutes,’48)
The Man in the Iron Mask: Handsome retelling of the reliable Alexander Dumas story of a guy unreasonably imprisoned and encased in an iron mask-since his very existence challenges the reigning baron of France, the youthful, self-centered Louis XIV. The destiny of both are eventually in the hands of the aging although still enthusiastic Musketeers. It could be difficult to miss with that cast; the film is relatively enjoyable, however it does go on too long. Cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Peter Sarsgaard, and Hugh Laurie. (132 minutes,’98)
Sgt. Bilko: An army comedy with Steve Martin, Dan Akroyd and Phil Hartman. Sgt Bilko does basically everything but army duties with his platoon of soldiers. Life in Sgt. Bilko’s army is quite nice. That is until Major Thorn shows up and tries to spoil the fun.
Disturbia: Kale has had his life turned upside down. His father’s death, which he feel responsible for has traumatized him badly. Snapping on an insensitive teacher, he punches the guy out. Instead of jail time he must serve a period of house confinement. Going stir crazy stuck at home, Kale, and his girlfriend Ashley, start spying on the neighbors. This voyeurism gets serious when they start to suspect that one of the neighbors is a serial killer.
The Omen: This is a remake of the classic’76 original. Born under suspicious circumstances, young Damian is a difficult child that his mother thinks he is evil. As things develop we soon realize that Damian is in fact the son of the devil. Now his father must go to Megiddo to learn how to stop the antichrist.
