Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 – Listen to the Girl!

We now expect our new cars to come with a GPS receiver as standard, and hopefully it’s a Garmin GPS Nuvi 350. No more searching through a map or street guide one handed with only one eye on the road. They have become such an integral part of our lives, especially when driving that many of us would be truly lost without them.

But do you know how they work or where they came from? As is often the case with clever technical advances, the Internet being a prime example, the GPS system was originally developed for purely military purposes to track ships and planes etc. but it wasn’t too long before the commercial advantages of such a system were recognised..

The GPS receiver as we know it relies on 24 operational satellites orbiting the earth at all times at a set distance of more than 12000 miles above the earth, although your Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 receiver only uses information from 4 of these satellites at any one time.

Every one of the 24 satellites orbits on a very precise line which ensures that your receiver is always in contact with at least 3 of the satellites. The 4th satellite is required to synchronize the other 3 satellites clocks with your receiver’s clock. Because the Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 system needs incredibly accurate time measurement, this is provided by atomic clocks courtesy of the U.S. Naval Observatory. All 24 of the orbiting GPS satellites is fitted with its own atomic clock.

The Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 receiver has a chip installed which is pre-programmed with a log book or almanac giving the positions of each satellite at any given time in the future, so that the receiver knows where to search for the nearest satellites. Reciprocally, the satellites send your device information every time they communicate to update this log book or almanac.

The accuracy of a position determined with a GPS depends on the type of receiver. The majority of Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 units will give you an accuracy of around 10 mtrs. If you had a GPS system back in the 1990’s, you will probably remember that you were lucky to be within a hundred meters of where you were told you were. When the military first allowed commercial use of the GPS system, it was agreed that the new Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 receiver’s accuracy would be limited to approx. 100 meters and this was done by coding a timing error into each devices software. Thankfully, this stipulation was done away with in 2000.

Now that the accuracy of your Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 is as good as anything on the market, you can plan your route in comfort and the knowledge that it will get you to exactly where you want to go, no need to check the map as your travelling. I know as a guy that the only hurdle I now have to get over is that the lady giving me directions, really is right this time!
