Garmin 750 GPS- Never Get Lost Again
In car GPS systems are now becoming a standard accessory and a Garmin 750 GPS is the choice of many. It puts an end to dangerously trying to read a map with only one hand on the wheel and one eye on the road. The portable GPS is now almost as familiar as the cell phone and without it, many of us would be completely and hopelessly lost.
So we all know what they are and do, but where did it all start? Not surprisingly, they were originally developed for military purposes, to keep track of ships, submarines, planes etc. but it obviously wasn’t long before the commercial viability of the GPS for everyday use became apparent.
Your Garmin 750 GPS receiver uses information from four of the 24 system satellites that are orbiting the earth at all times, with a complete orbit of each satellite taking approx. 12 hours at a distance of over twelve thousand miles from the earth’s surface.
Each GPS satellite has been projected into a very precise orbit, ensuring your navigation device always gets signals from at least 3 satellites. As your receiver’s clock needs to be synchronized with the clocks in the three satellites it is receiving data from, this is the function of the signal from the 4th satellite in your quartet. Because the GPS system needs incredibly accurate time measurement, this is provided by atomic clocks courtesy of the U.S. Naval Observatory. There is also an atomic clock inside each of the orbiting satellites.
Every Garmin 750 GPS receiver needs to know where to find its closest 4 satellites at any given time. To enable this, there is a chip installed inside every device that contains a log book for every satellites position at any given time. Reciprocally, the satellites send your device information every time they communicate to update this log book or almanac.
Accurate positioning is obviously paramount and this degree of accuracy is dependent upon the type of device you are employing. The majority of Garmin 750 GPS units will give you an accuracy of around 10 mtrs. You might have noticed if you had an early GPS that it wasn’t that accurate and for very good reason. When the system was created, timing errors were inserted into GPS transmissions to limit the accuracy of non-military GPS receivers to about 100 meters. Thankfully, this stipulation was done away with in 2000.
